Wind in Motion
An Art Report on Jenz Shifu’s Exhibition
Official Press Release – Jenzi Art Gallery
Jenzi Art Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by artist Jenz Shifu, showcasing an integrated body of work spanning calligraphy, painting, installation and performative practices. The exhibition reflects over four decades of Jenz Shifu’s continuous exploration of the relationship between art and spiritual cultivation.
Exhibition Overview
Moving beyond conventional media categories, the exhibition situates writing, abstraction, and spatial action within a shared conceptual framework. The gallery space itself functions as an active component of the work, where walls, movement, and modes of viewing participate in the formation of meaning. Through deconstruction and reconfiguration of written structures, the works emphasize temporality and process.
Cage and Breakthrough: From Darkness to Light
Several works convey a strong visual and psychological tension. Enclosed forms, layered inscriptions, and compressed compositions evoke the metaphor of a “cage,” suggesting the constraints faced by humans on existential and social levels.
At the same time, intentional gaps, open spaces, and passages of light introduce a sense of transformation. Rather than denying limitation, the works articulate a gradual shift from confinement toward openness, pointing to renewal emerging from within constraint.
Deconstructing Language in a Contemporary Context
Rooted in the tradition of Chinese calligraphy, Jenz Shifu’s practice moves beyond legibility. Characters are transformed into lines, rhythms, and embodied gestures, returning writing to its material and temporal dimensions. Classical calligraphic spirit is reactivated within a contemporary context, engaging in dialogue with abstract visual language across cultures.
Performative and Interactive Dimensions
The works are not conceived as static objects but as processes that unfold through viewing. The audience’s movement, duration of attention, and spatial positioning become integral to the experience, aligning the exhibition with performative and relational art practices.
Art and the Way as One
Underlying the exhibition is the artist’s consistent position that art and the spiritual path are inseparable. Artistic practice is presented not merely as formal experimentation, but as an ongoing discipline that connects tradition, contemporary methodology, and personal belief.
Conclusion
This exhibition presents a highly integrated artistic practice that bridges historical depth and contemporary relevance. It invites viewers into a continuously unfolding field of perception, where transformation, movement, and awareness remain in active dialogue.
